Items and Upgrade Components in World of Warcraft
Upgrades can boost the value of weapons and armor. However, upgrading magic and common gear is rarely worth the investment as rare or unique equipment can quickly surpass it.
Upgrades can be made to an item up to six times. Each upgrade will increase the item gauge.

Items with upgrade components cannot be used to create new items.
